"I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results.” - Michael Jordan
The Men’s Basketball team is one of the most successful sports team in the University but we are always looking for new players, particularly if you have played before.
After finishing second in our Division for the second season in a row, our aim for the 2011-12 season is to come first in our Division and gain promotion and win the BUCS CUP. We understand that this task will not be easy, as it is a very competitive league.
Hard work, dedication and a positive attitude are the basic requirements needed to achieve this.
The Basketball Club works in partnership with Derby Trailblazers Basketball Club. Trailblazers First team are England Basketball’s Division 1 Champions, the Second team play in Division 3 North and University players will have the opportunity to train and play with Trailblazers in the National League, in addition to representing the University.
We will be training up to four times a week in order to reach our goal; two team training sessions are lead by Coach Vernon McGarey who is an excellent coach with many years of experience in this league, the third session is Strength and Conditioning with Donna Kellogg; our fourth session is more informal and open to anyone to play.
In addition to BUCS League and Cup fixtures, the team will play a number of pre and post season friendly fixtures and Men’s Basketball is part of the annual Varsity series against our rivals, the University of Lincoln.
New players who are enrolling at the University in September are welcome to enquire about pre-season training. Contact Coach Vernon McGarey on: v.mcgarey@derby.ac.uk
