Academic Representation – The Programme Rep System

Congratulations to those of you who have been elected as Programme Reps for this coming year. It is a big challenge but one that is highly rewarding. Through the information provided in the handbook, training sessions and the Students' Unions periodic updates we hope to equip you with the tools to do your job successfully and hopefully allow you to reflect on your time as a Rep feeling that you made a difference.

For anyone interested in becoming a Programme Rep, the basic information is outlined on these pages and further details can be gained from speaking to Torri Crapper, your Democracy and Representation Coordinator - torri.crapper@udsu.co.uk

What is a Programme Rep?

Programme Reps are students who have been elected by their peers into the role in order to speak on behalf of the student body and highlight problems that are occurring. Each programme within the University usually has 2 representatives per year who are responsible for getting into the thick of it and being a link between the students and academics to represent on issues that are affecting people's study. Reps go through training to ensure they are confident and equipped to deal with any issues they encounter and they are also supported by a strong network within the Students' Union.

The role of a Programme Rep –

  • To represent the views of their fellow students studying on a particular programme
  • To consult with University and Students' Union staff on academic issues
  • To work with the Students' Union to raise the profile of the student voice

What does a Programme Rep do?

The main job of a Programme Rep is to bring any academic or course related issues and concerns to the attention of the relevant people. There is a Rep presence at Programme Committee meetings and Education Zones, and they are required to submit a termly report summarising the progress that has been made and any outstanding areas of concern or trends.

Programme Rep Conference

24th November, 9.00am – Kedleston Road.

The Programme Rep Conference is an all day event run by the Union and the University and is designed to develop and reward you by providing workshops in which you will be able to learn new skills and build relationships with other Reps. It is also an invaluable and unique opportunity to pose your questions to the people at the top.

The Vice-Chancellor, Pro Vice-Chancellors and directors of key departments will be on stage in front of you for a panel discussion ready to answer your questions about your student experience. There is no other institution that offers this kind of opportunity for its students and it is definitely not to be missed.

Academic staff are aware of the need for you to attend this event and the arrangement has been made so that you are not required to attend lectures and such like on that day.

Transport will be provided for students travelling from Buxton.
