What is a Sabbatical Officer?
A Sabbatical Officer is a full-time, paid, student representative who has been elected by the student body. The student is expected to take a year’s break from their studies (or their career if standing in their graduation year) with which to fulfil the role on behalf of the Union.
The term of office for a Sabbatical Officer is one academic year. As defined in the Education Act; any currently standing Sabbatical Officer may re-run for a position only once, and therefore may only hold office for a maximum of two years.
Each position has a specific area of responsibility as defined in the Union’s Constitution, however, each Sabbatical’s core role is to represent the students at the University of Derby as an embodiment of our vision: " to defend and extend the rights of our students by proactively creating and maximizing opportunities." A majority of the role will involve attending a number of committees to ensure that the University are putting students at the forefront of their decision making.
Each Sabbatical over the age of 18 will also be a trustee of the organisation, meaning they are, by law, responsible for all of the Union’s financial and legal situations.
For the term of office 2010/2011 each Sabbatical Officer will be given payment of £16,500 for fulfilling their role.
Sabbatical Officers are responsible for making decisions on, and influencing the direction of, the Students’ Union and are accountable to the Union Council.
