► Coaching & Officiating

The Athletic Union and the University is committed to providing new and existing coaches with support and development opportunities in coaching and officiating. Through university links with national governing bodies, schools and colleges and the county sports partnership we can offer students and staff the opportunity to gain qualifications and experience in coaching.

Coaching and Refereeing Courses

As part of our commitment to increasing participation and opportunities in sport, we will be running the following courses for University of Derby students. Funding is available to support the cost of some of these courses, providing you sign up to the terms and conditions of the coaching programme.

FA Level 1 coaching course- £75* pp (normally £105pp)

The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football is aimed at managers and coaches of club teams aged 7 to 16 years or people looking to go on and take the Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football. The course consists of the practical delivery of sessions, a Safe Guarding Children (SGC) module, and an Emergency Aid module. Candidates are required to complete an assessed delivery of a practical session.

  • Saturday 20th March, 9.00am-4.30pm: Introduction and Practical (Classroom and 3G Pitch)
  • Sunday 21st March, 9.00am-4.30pm: Practical (3G Pitch)
  • Tuesday 23rd March, 6.30pm-9.30pm: Emergency Aid (Classroom)
  • Thursday 25th March, 6.30pm-9.30pm: Safeguarding Children (Classroom)
  • Saturday 27th March, 9.00am-4.30pm: Practical (3G Pitch)
  • Sunday 28th March, 9.00am-4.30pm: Assessments (3G Pitch and Classroom)

FA Refereeing Course- Free* (normally £50pp)

The Basic Refereeing course requires candidates to complete 24 hours of learning plus six games. This course is ideally suited to those wanting to become a referee involved in the 11 a side game both in youth and adult football. The course will introduce the laws of the game as well as developing the practical skills required to be a football referee.

  • Saturday 20th February 9.00am-4.30pm: Practical and theory
  • Sunday 21st February 9.00am-4.30pm: Practical and theory plus one of the examinations or report writing
  • Monday 22nd February 6.00pm-9.00pm: require 3G or sports hall for practical examination

RFU Rugby Ready Course- £18pp

Rugby Ready is a short course which aims to support coaches in preparing to play the game with good practice models for physical conditioning, technique, injury prevention, and injury management.

  • Sunday 14 February 9.00am-5.00pm

 

Football Funding Terms and Conditions

The funding for the FA Level 1 course and Basic Refereeing course is funded through the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Football Programme. In order to access the funding the following criteria must be met:

FA Level 1 course:

  • You must agree to be part of the Intra-mural football coaching 'pot'
  • All students must register on the BUCS Football Leadership and Volunteering Programme
  • Students must register that they have coached for minimum of 10 hours (this can be any form of football, eg intra mural, BUCS, local clubs, kids etc)

Placements for coaching will providing by the University and will include posts such as University football teams, intra mural programme, Derbyshire schemes and Soccerstars.

Basic Refereeing course:

  • Students must register on the Leadership and Volunteering Programme
  • Students must register that they have officiated a minimum of six games (this can be any form of football, eg intra mural or schools games etc)
