Welcome to the Democracy zone!
This zone meets on a bi-monthly basis to discuss critically the Students Union and how it is run. The zone scrutinises the constitution and the standing orders working as an advisory group who suggest the necessary changes that may need to be made through policy.
Currently the main focus of the group is spearheading awareness around the General elections. Students are seen as apathetic and disengaged regarding the political arena, however we believe that this is not entirely true! Students have been given the opportunity to register through our Democracy days, we encourage students to use their vote to make a difference both locally and nationally. We believe that here at Derby students play a significant role in elections which also means that candidates from local political party must work closer with our students. Nationally there are a whopping 7 million students which make up 15% of the voting population, this is a significant figure considering the level influence that students could have.
During the year we will also include a number of guest speakers who will add their flavour to democracy and if that is not enough we will be holding Democracy days where local constituencies will be present for you to challenge and discuss what hey will be doing for you if they got into power!
