Hi guys,
WELCOME TO THE WELFARE AND STUDENT RIGHTS ZONE PAGE

Download Minutes from the 16/12/09 Meeting

At the Welfare and Student Rights Zone we will discuss issues that directly impact on your welfare and your rights as well as some of the wider issues.
This Zone has a new format this year making it bigger, better and more engaging than before, but in order to do this we need YOU to come along and have your say in the matters that are important to you.
A Zone meeting is just an informal get together between YOU, the students and me, your VP Welfare and Student Rights where you can bring to the table any welfare and student rights issues that are affecting you, we can make policy to take to union council and get outside sources in that can provide you with the knowledge you might need.
The idea is to have themed Zone Meetings that link in with The Source, the Students Union Independent Advice Centre and outside organisations that will benefit you looking at the issue you want to explore.
We will debate relevant policy before submitting it to the Students' Union's Executive Committee, ensuring that our Students' Union has a stance on some of the biggest contemporary issues. We will ensure that every member of our Students' Union is treated fairly and that they have access to the basic rights available to everyone. Subjects such as students rights at work, housing and sexual health, all come under the remit of this Zone, and as you can see these are issues that make a real difference to the lives of individuals, and issues the zone will have the resources to campaign on.
This Zone will also be responsible for holding our Elected Officers to account; most importantly we will be responsible for making sure the whole Students' Union is keeping to its mission of extending and defending the rights of its members.
For more information or to put forwrad an idea for a zone meeting contact me at vpwelfare@udsu.co.uk.
Look foward to seeing you soon.
Love,
Your Welfairy

Welfairy's thoughts:

A typical student house of 5: 5 laptops and chargers (with all your university work on), 4 tvs, 2 xboxes, 1 playstaion, 3 pairs of GHDs, 5 mobile phones , 2 pairs of expensive trainers, some designer clothes, jewellery from special birthdays, 4 printers, 1 pair of curlers, 2 bikes, 5 ipods and speakers and lots of  spare change that adds up and much much more – sounds appealing doesn’t it.

House Safety

House safety is incredibly crucial and the number one and MOST important thing you need to remember is to get contents insurance for your house. Student houses do get targeted and burglaries do happen so get your things insured so that you can get replacements if the worst does happen. Check out this link for more information on insurance http://www.udsu.co.uk/advice/content/168955/insurance/

Also remember the basics:
·         Make sure you lock up all windows and doors when you leave the house
·         Don’t make it obvious when you are leaving and entering the house
·         Watch out for people hanging around your house who may look suspicious.
·         Don’t leave your valuables on show
·         Make sure all shared gates are locked at all times
·         Make friends with your neighbours so that they can keep an eye on your house as well.
