An Officer Trustee is a full-time, paid, student representative who has been elected by the student body to represent them. The student is expected to take a year long break from their studies (or their career if standing in their graduation year) with which to fulfil the role on behalf of the Union.
Each position has a specific area of responsibility as defined in the Union’s Constitution, however, each Officer Trustee’s core role is to represent the students at the University of Derby as an embodiment of our vision: “to defend and extend the rights of our students by proactively creating and maximizing opportunities.” A majority of the role will involve attending a number of committees to ensure that the University are putting students at the forefront of their decision making.

Their main responsibilities are for making decisions on, and influencing the direction of, the Students’ Union and are held to account by the Union Council/AGM.
Any Officer over the age of 18 will also be a trustee of the organisation, meaning they are, by law, responsible for all of the Union’s financial and legal situations. For the term of office 2011/2012 each Sabbatical Officer will be given payment of £16,500 for fulfilling their role. Any Officer under the age of 18 will simply be an Officer rather than an Officer Trustee and will hold the same accountability to the membership though not to the law.
